Frequently Asked Questions
1. Are Sishyakulam classes online?
Yes. All of Sishyakulam classes are conducted online through Google Meet, allowing us to teach students across India, the USA, Canada, Europe, the Middle East, Singapore, Australia, and other parts of the world.
All regular classes are one-on-one, so every Sishya receives focused attention, correction, and guidance from their Guru.
2. What is the fee structure?
The fee depends on the student’s level, class duration, frequency and learning goals.
We usually share the exact fee after the discovery session, once we understand the Sishya’s journey better.
Payments are generally made in advance for a set of classes, such as 6, 12, or 24 classes.
3. Are online classes effective?
Yes. Online classes can be highly effective when they are structured properly and supported with consistent engagement between classes.
At Sishyakulam, learning does not stop when the class ends. Students are supported in the interim period through recordings, homework, practice guidance, listening recommendations, between-class feedback, and regular follow-ups wherever required. This helps the Sishya revise better, practise correctly, and stay connected to the learning process through the week.
4. Where is Sishyakulam based, and where are the Gurus based?
Sishyakulam operates primarily out of Chennai and Bangalore in India and serves a global community of learners. Our Gurus are based across different cities and countries, and are chosen for their musical depth, teaching ability, professionalism, and alignment with the Sishyakulam approach.
We recommend a Guru only after understanding the Sishya’s level, goals, time zone, temperament, and learning needs.
5. What happens in the trial or discovery session?
The discovery session helps us understand the Sishya before regular classes begin. We discuss the student’s musical background, current level, goals, preferred timings, learning style, and expectations.
If the student has learnt music before, we may request them to sing briefly so we can understand their level better. It is not a formal audition. It is a warm conversation to help us recommend the right Guru and learning path.
6. Why is the discovery session important?
Every Sishya is different. A beginner, a returning learner, an advanced student, and a child preparing for performances - all need different kinds of guidance.
The discovery session helps us avoid a one-size-fits-all approach. It allows us to recommend the right Guru, class duration, frequency, curriculum direction, and fee structure.
7. Do you follow a fixed curriculum?
Sishyakulam has a structured curriculum framework, but we customise the journey for every student. You may refer to our Curriculum document here.
Depending on the level, the learning may include swaras, alankarams, geethams, varnams, krithis, voice culture, raga understanding, gamakams, layam, manodharma, and performance preparation. The curriculum is used as a guide, not as a rigid template.
8. Do you have grade exams or certifications?
Sishyakulam internally assesses students based on level, readiness, and musical maturity. These levels help us understand where the student stands and what kind of training they need next. However, we prioritise musical excellence over rushing students through grades.
We also guide students who wish to prepare for external examinations, and we are building our own certification programmes, which will be launched soon.
9. Do you teach beginners, children, adults, and advanced students?
Yes. We work with complete beginners, young children, adult learners, returning students, and advanced musicians.
For beginners, we focus on a strong foundation in shruthi, swara, thaalam, voice, and listening. For advanced students, the training may include repertoire building, manodharma, concert preparation, and deeper musical development.
10. What does the Sishyakulam ecosystem include?
Our engagement extends far beyond the classroom, because we believe true musical growth happens more through practice, listening, reflection, performance, and community.
The Sishyakulam ecosystem includes one-on-one classes, carefully chosen Gurus, personalised learning paths, curriculum guidance, practice support, listening recommendations, periodic reviews, workshops, masterclasses, Sishya Sabha performance opportunities, EPIC Choir, and the Guru Excellence Programme.
Through this beyond-the-classroom engagement, every Sishya is supported with the right environment, exposure, discipline, and encouragement needed for long-term artistic growth.
11. How are classes scheduled and managed?
Class timings are coordinated based on mutual availability between the Guru and the Sishya. Since our students are based across time zones, we try to find a schedule that works well for both sides.
Once onboarding is complete, the student receives a unique class meeting link, communication details, and the required learning resources. We request students to attend regularly, practise between classes, and communicate in advance if a class needs to be rescheduled.
12. How do we begin learning with Sishyakulam?
The first step is to schedule a discovery session with our Founder, Shankar Santhanagopalan Ji. Please choose a convenient time here to take the next step.
After understanding the student’s background, goals, and availability, we recommend the right Guru, class structure, curriculum direction, and fee plan.
